Make a splash at bath time with easy homemade tub crayons. Kids will love that they can draw all over the tub—and you’ll love that you don’t have to worry about cleanup.

What You'll Need

What to Do

  1. Coat the ice-cube tray with vegetable-oil spray.

  2. Grate the bar of soap using the smallest holes on the cheese grater.

  3. Add 10 to 15 drops of food coloring and 2 tablespoons of warm water to the grated soap.

  4. Stir until the mixture looks like thick dough, adding more warm water a tablespoon at a time if needed.

  5. Firmly press the mixture into 4 sections of the ice cube tray. Freeze for 30 minutes.

  6. Pop the crayons out of the tray, and then let them dry for a day or two before using.

Extend the Fun

Younger kids: Play with colors. Explore what happens when you mix different food-coloring drops and different amounts of colors together. What color do you get if you add 5 drops of red and 5 drops of yellow to the soap? What do you get if you mix 5 drops of blue and 5 drops of yellow?

Older kids: This activity uses an ice-cube tray for the mold. It produces a cubed crayon that is easy to hold. What else could you use as a mold? Do you think a crayon in the shape of a ball would be easier or harder to hold? Why?
