Encourage reading and creativity with an easy kids bookmark craft that helps you save your spot!

Choose from the DIY bookmark ideas below (or create your own based on a favorite book character) and cut out the pieces from cardstock. Glue on decorations such as wiggle eyes, ribbon or pompoms, and add details with markers. Be sure an adult helps with anything sharp!

What You'll Need

What to Do

  1. Petey Pizza Giraffe

Step 1: Cut a giraffe shape out of cardstock. Then cut small pepperoni, mushroom and green pepper shaped “spots” out of different colored cardstock.

Step 2: Glue the spots onto the body of the giraffe. Use a wiggle eye and markers to create a face. Add pompoms to the horns and tail.

  2. Toadrick Van Sprinkles Frog Ice Cream Cone

Step 1: Cut a cone shape out of cardstock. Use a marker to make a waffle pattern.

Step 2: Cut an ice-cream-scoop-shaped frog face out of cardstock. Use wiggle eyes and markers to create a face and sprinkles. Glue the frog face to the top of the cone.

Step 3: Cut a cherry out of red cardstock. Glue it to the top of the frog’s head. Cut a piece of ribbon and glue it to the mouth for a tongue.

  3. Meow St. Cloud Cat

Step 1: Cut a cat head out of white cardstock. Use wiggle eyes and a marker to create a face.

Step 2: Cut 6 pieces of ribbon all the same size, in a rainbow of colors. Glue one end of each ribbon piece to the back of the cat head, so the ends hang down evenly.

  4. Wiggly Wyatt Caterpillar

Step 1: Cut a wavy caterpillar out of cardstock, about the size of a jumbo craft stick. Don’t forget the antennae!

Step 2: Use wiggly eyes and markers to create a face. Add pom poms to the antennae. Cut out a tiny bow tie and glue it on to make Wyatt fancy!

  5. Madame Sugar Shell Cupcake Snail

Step 1: Cut a cupcake wrapper out of cardstock. Use markers or pieces of ribbon to create pleats. Cut a semicircle out of cardstock for the cupcake top and glue it to the top of the cupcake wrapper. Cut a small piece of fruit out of card stock (a strawberry, blueberry or raspberry) and glue it to the top of the cupcake.

Step 2: Cut a snail body/head and two eyestalks out of cardstock. Glue the eye stalks to the top of the head. Add wiggle eyes at the top of the stalks and draw a mouth at the base of the stalks with a marker.

Step 3: Glue the cupcake onto the body of the snail, behind the head.

Extend the Fun

For younger kids

The shapes for the frog, cat and caterpillar can all be simplified to help little ones easily build their Page Pals independently. When they’ve finished their masterpiece, help your child write their Pal’s name on the back (for letter practice!). Then take a well-deserved book break and put your new Page Pal to good use!

For older kids

Many of these Page Pals combine two silly things. (A frog and an ice cream cone?! A giraffe and a pizza?!) Have your child imagine and create their own hybrid Page Pal creatures. What things do they combine? What are they called? Where did they come from? Talk about which creatures you wish you could meet in real life and why.
