Help your cutie pies make the cutest bugs with these DIY crafts using recycled materials. You’ll have fun and practice essential development skills with this bug art activity from the pages of High Five magazine!

Have an adult help with anything sharp and use items large enough to prevent choking.

What You'll Need

What to Do

  1. Have an adult cut a bug-shaped body from the cardboard.

  2. Cut wings, stingers and additional body parts out of construction paper and bubble wrap.

  3. Cut antennae and legs out of fuzzy sticks and paper straws, or use paper clips.

  4. Glue these assorted pieces to the bug bodies to make your one-of-a-kind insect craft.

  5. Add buttons and bottle caps as eyes or spots.

  6. Add bread clips as pincers.

  7. Use paint and yarn to decorate your bugs with color and texture.

Extend the Fun

After exercising your fine motor skills and creativity making your bug crafts, turn your attention to practicing gross motor skills and imagination. Choose one of your newly created bugs and get into character. What is your name? Where are you from? How do you move? Wriggle, flap, jump and buzz your way through an insect adventure!
